Before having some changes in their line-up, finally, the gothic metal band Tristania, has come back with new hopes, new ways to explore and its 6th musical project, that is under pre-production in the Woodhouse Studios (Germany). Ole Vistnes, the new bass player, wants to share his time with the SubExistance readers:

-Hi, Ole! How are you? Nice to having you with us! You should be very busy these days with the pre-production of the new album of the band! But instead of that, you plays with another band called Zerozonic too, how do you organize your life day after day to combine your labor with the two bands?

Hello Diva. I`m fine thank you! Thank you for your interest. You are right that the day to day life is a puzzle to organize, and a real challenge to work out! The writing and pre-production of the sixth studio album from Tristania is, as you mentioned, soon finished, and we are about to start the studio recordings.

I am able to combine the two bands because in Zerozonic I am just bassplayer. The band was started by Daniel, and he and Leo has written all the songs, and have all the organizing contacts and booking obligations. In Tristania however, I am quite involved in the songwriting, and have also been coordinating the pre-production of the new songs from my computer. It`s just a matter of priorities, really. Now we work as heck with the Tristania album, last winter we toured Norway with Zerozonic, probably next year a new Zerozonic album. To me, it`s all about putting real effort into the work that`s here and now, and make it right.

-The two bands have different styles, do you have one favorite or simply it´s a way to develop some alternatives into your personal style? What are your influences?

The two bands have different musical styles that to me represent two different paths. They hardly cross each other, and that is the reason why I’m able to combine them. To me personally it`s impossible to talk about favorites. Both bands and both musical directions represent a lot of what is me. The fact that I have the possibility to express myself in bands that are this different, makes me a more complete musician and artist, I think. I strongly feel that the one impulse can help kick the other in an unexpected direction, and this way explore new ground. According to my bandmates in Tristania, my songwriting has somewhat of a "metal" feel to it, and though it didn`t come intentionally, I know where that comes from! I don`t have a favorite of the two, but in Tristania, I create music. Then the songs become like my kids, and of course this creates a unique bond.

I have a hard time describing my influences. Not that I don`t have bands and artist that I have listened to, that really left a mark in me. But there are different types of influences. There are the ones where you watch and listen to bands and artists you love, and you more or less try to copy them. This can be cool, and many bands have built solid careers on this principal. But there are influences that come from different kinds of music, or art or cultural or social matters. The stuff that make you feel something, and makes you want to react. These are the most important influences, because when there is no standard to live up to, nothing to copy, you need to create, and not just duplicate or recreate. The constant stream of impressions forces the creative person to find his own voice.

The most important influences in my musical world comes from highly different kinds of music. Not that I have a very extreme or extraordinarily diverse taste in music, but because I let all the music I listen to influence me. Be it metal, baroque, jazz, techno/electronica, pop/R`n`B and so on. And I suck out the things I love from the different styles. The edge and power of metal, the heartbreaking beauty of certain classical music, the improvisation and borderless jazz, the groove from funk or the heart and originality from some folk music. And so on. But when it comes to bands and artists that "made" me, I can mention a few: Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, Opeth, Prince, Jethro Tull, Extreme, Peter Gabriel, Dire Straits, Pat Metheny, Extol, Machine Head, The Haunted and more. And getting to know the guys in Tristania has really opened a whole new world of music to me. Anders especially has pushed a lot of music on me that I didn`t know from before. Wilco, Modest Mouse, Arab Strap, Tom Waits, Radiohead, and many more.

-Has it been a dream come true your arrival to Tristania? What are the songs of the band that you like the best?

Yes. It`s a dream come true. Not necessarily because Tristania has a great career, and the success. But it is a dream come true to work with a bunch of guys that have become close friends of mine. We have a collective creative effort that is amazing. I grow as a songwriter, bassist and person by being in the band. That is so much more important than success! And I get to travel around the world and play in front of thousands of people. Of course that is a dream come true too Mruga

My favorite Tristania songs must be My Lost Leonore, Heretique, Selling Out, Libre, Sacrilege and Mercyside. And I`m really proud of the new songs. One of my favorites of the new ones is called Patriot Games.

-Musical diversity has always been important for Tristania, do you think that your addition to the band, as the other new members too, will have an influence that will turn definitively the Tristania that we knew as far as now?

You are absolutely right that diversity and evolution has been maybe the most important aspect of Tristania’s music. Just like Morten, Vibeke and Kjetil played a part in making Tristania what it was before, the new members have played an important role in characterizing the new Tristania. And you are partly right, the new Tristania is a radically new Tristania. But hey, Tristania has been radically changed many times before, I think people are getting used to it Wesoly. Still there are elements and aspects of the new songs that in many ways points directly at our roots, and there are songs that has strong connections to "old" Tristania.

-Do you prefer the old style, closer to the symphonic metal, or the new style of the lasts albums, something cleaner and more progressive?

I have no problem finding elements I really love in all the different styles and genres that Tristania has explored. Like I said before, different music have different qualities, and something is unique with all of the previous albums. I have always been a sucker for pompous music. I could never get enought of 80`s Queen when I was 14, so I really love the pompous Tristania. But I have at the same time listened alot to intense, organic, progressive hard rock, like Deep Purple. And there is a lot of that attitude in Ashes, I think. So it`s meaningless to say I prefer this or that, because it changes as I grow as a person and musician. Right now I prefer the style we are making right now. But I hope that`s gonna change! I don`t wanna be making the same album ten years down the road, that we are writing now!

-Could you tell us something in advance about this new album that is still under pre-production? Could we find any surprise in relation to the other albums?

Yes I can tell you about the new album! We will record 13 new songs, plus a couple of bonus tracks where Mariangela will sing old Tristania songs in her way. The album will be very varied in styles, and include both fast catchy gothrocker songs, epic gothmetal ballads and darker doomy songs. There will also be a few songs that are something you`ve never heard from Tristania before!

We have a couple of surprises up our sleeve, oh yes!! I can`t reveal anything now, but we`re really excited about it!

-You are involved in the songwriting for this last album, where do you find the inspiration to write the lyrics?

My main work with the songwriting is the musical part. Whenever i DO write lyrics, it`s always because I react to something. Something that annoys me, makes me happy, angry og just plainly enters my brain, and won`t leave. To write can be a really good way do deal with such things.

-Thank you, Ole, hope this new era has all the success that this band deserves! Would you like to say something to the SubExistance readers?

Hello SubExistance readers! Thank you for your time!

I know very well that a lot of people almost demands bands they love to stay the same through their entire carreer. Well, we are not AC/DC! We change as we grow! A tree that doesn`t grow, dies. It`s in the nature. Same with us, we are not 17 anymore, and our musical preferences change. I know that a lot of our listeners have grown with us, and really love the development in the band. This is what I hope, that we can open new musical doors for our listeners. When I was younger I had certain music that I didn`t like. Period. Like indierock. I just didn`t like it. Why? I`m actually not sure! But I know that I didn`t give it a fair chance. And now I am 27, and I am discovering new music all the time, including alot of the stuff that I despised without a good reason when I was younger. I was, to be honest, quite stupid! I had an idea of what was good music, and everything that didn`t fit in that idea, was garbage. That’s what I want to say to the Dark Eye readers: Listen to music with your heart, and challenge your tastes. You might get surprised!

Ole

-Thank you again! Our best wishes with both projects!
